SWIM BROTHERS BRONZE RECRUITS

Congratulations to Wanda’s 7 new graduates from the Swim Brothers group who recently completed their Bronze Medallion to become surf lifesavers. They were the first to take on the ground-breaking, culturally sensitive lifesaver training program and were looking forward to seeing more members of culturally and linguistically diverse communities become surf lifesavers.

WANDA AT THE AUSSIES 2022

Wanda SLSC has finished 7th overall at the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles.

The Championships were held on the Gold Coast last week, with youth, masters and open competitions.

“It has been a challenging year, so it was fantastic to see our club succeed and enjoy Aussies,” said Nathan Spinner, Wanda SLSC President.

“As always, it was a true team effort. Our touring team competed in all disciplines – water, beach, distance swimming and running, surf boats, surfboard riding, lifesaving, R&R and march past”.

“Special mention and thanks to our coaches, managers and volunteers.  With so much disruption this year, they’ve had to be adaptable and positive. The entire club values their dedication and hard work, we wouldn’t be here without them.

“We crowned 10 new Australian champions, won 11 silver medals, 14 bronze and had many top 10 performances. These are incredible results against Australia’s best, proud memories that will last a lifetime.

“It’s certainly not all about winning though. There were hundreds of personal bests and achievements within our squad. Our members come to Aussies with different goals and everyone is to be commended on their effort representing Wanda,” said Mr Spinner.

Wanda SLSC was proud to launch two new surf craft in honour of dedicated club volunteers on Saturday 26 March, in front of a large crowd of members and supporters. Speeches and tributes were followed by the maiden voyage of both vessels.

These surf craft are vital to Wanda and, in club tradition, have been named after members who stand out. The craft were kindly donated by Lloyds Supa IGA Cronulla & Hurstville (IRB) and Gerard Malouf & Partners (surf boat).

The new surf boat was named in honour of Rod ‘Stick’ Holdsworth, a Wanda SLSC member for 40 years. Rod has contributed widely to our club for decades, in particular the boat section. He was a rower, sweep, coach and mentor. His coaching helped us win our first Australian junior title, and his determined approach guided many crews and junior rowers. It’s a fitting tribute to name a surf boat in his honour, a boat that will be valued by Wanda crews for years to come.

The new IRB was named in honour of hard working club members Adam “Bucks” Buckley and Mark Lloyd. As leading IRB section members, they have spent countless voluntary hours on rescue efforts, supporting nippers and at surf carnivals. Both Mark and Adam are a driving force behind the professional response of our IRB team, and wholly deserve this honour.

Congratulations.

WANDA LIFE MEMBER MICK BRANNOCK AWARDED OAM & MAYORAL MINUTE

Congratulations to Wanda SLSC’s Life Member, Michael (Mick) Brannock who was recognised in the Australia Day Honours list for his contribution to Surf Life Saving and received a Medal in the General Division (OAM).
After joining Wanda SLSC in 1962, Mick was elevated to Life Membership in 1982 and has been a committee member of Wanda SLSC since 1964, holding positions such as President, Club Captain, Member Services Captain and Boat Captain. His contribution to Wanda up to receiving life membership in 1982 was distinguished and exemplary. Even after this prestigious club honour Mick has and continues to work for the members of Wanda and for the broader community in many and varied roles and is the driving force behind the success of Wanda SLSC’s annual Sutherland 2 Surf Fun Run.
Mick continues to contribute to Wanda through maintenance of lifesaving equipment and general clubhouse repairs, maintaining Wanda’s honour boards and assisting with memorabilia and historical archiving as well as volunteering as an official for Surf lifesaving Surf sports carnivals on a local and national level.
Thanks, Mick for your lifetime of service to our community through surf lifesaving, community programs and events and for your dedication and friendship to the Wanda family.

BASS STRAIT MILES FOR SMILES
THEY DID IT!
A group of Wanda members took part in an epic journey rowing the “Terry Dowers” surf boat across the Bass Strait, raising much-needed funds for Clown Doctors. Congrats to the entire crew, which included Wanda members Andrew Lawson, Joe Isaacs, Beau and Wes Dredge and Phil Vial.
The world’s first trip took eight days to complete, with the group camping on Bass Strait islands throughout the journey before arriving in Little Musselroe Bay in January. The surf boat “Terry Dowers” named in honour of past Wanda Life Member Terry “The Dog” Dowers was then donated to Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club and heralded to be “the first seaworthy boat they’ve had in years”. 2021 BATE BAY GOLD HOSTED BY WANDA SLSC

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Bate Bay Gold at Wanda on Saturday Coolangatta Gold at Bate Bay on Saturday 20 November.

Wanda’s Director of Surf Sport and carnival director for the Bate Bay Gold, Greg Pierce, was pleased that the race could be run safely and thanked his volunteers for supporting this year’s event.

“We host a lot of carnivals and we have a beach area here that’s conducive to having this sort of event. You can basically watch the race the whole way along the course,” said Greg Pierce.

“We shortened the course slightly this year which meant that we could keep the competitors in view the whole time.”
