WANDA SLSC’S 5TH ANNUAL TRADIES ONE CLUB SURF CARNIVAL

Surf sports was back in a big way on Saturday when 1,190 competitors from U9 to O40 years of age hit Wanda beach for the annual Wanda SLSC Tradies One Club surf carnival.

Leading athletes and nippers representing 30 clubs from across Sydney and NSW took part in part in the Wanda SLSC event, now in its fifth year.

This year, the event attracted some of the best surf sports competitors in Australia. Ironwoman and Ironman stars like Lizzie Welborn, Gemma Smith, Kendrick Lewis. the Morris brothers, and Jackson Borg battled it out with local stars Britney Pierce, Carla Papac, Taylar Puskaric, Noah Steiner, Nathan Jay, Will Budd, and Jay Furniss, as they prepare for elite racing this summer.

Wanda’s strength across all age divisions and genders resulted in the Club winning the Tradies Trophy for the Overall Carnival Point Score trophy ahead of North Bondi, South Maroubra, and Newport who were the 2020 NSW State Point Score Champions.

Newport SLSC took out the premier Tradies Open Mixed 6 Person Taplin Relay, a team event that involves male and female athletes competing across the swim, board, and ski disciplines.

“Our carnival brings together competitors of all ages” said Greg Allum AM, Carnival Organiser.

“It’s all about young and older generations participating together, enjoying a great day out and putting their lifesaving skills on display.

“This year was especially important for as our members have had little opportunity to hone lifesaving skills and to demonstrate their capabilities in a competitive environment.

“As it is every year, a highlight was the Marc Leabeater Open Men’s sprint race, won by Michael Kember from Manly SLSC. The memorial event is in memory of Marc, an Australian Champion Beach Sprinter and much-loved member of Wanda SLSC.

“We also had a large number of competitors with disability, it’s wonderful to see this group growing each year.

“Carnivals like ours cannot happen without support and we greatly thank our Officials, Workforce, Water Safety and most importantly major supporter Tradies, along with club sponsors Ace Gutters, Lloyds Supa IGA Cronulla, Infront, Masterton Homes and Network 10,” said Mr Allum.
