RESCUE NOMINATION DECEMBER 2023

We are very proud of 2 separate rescues performed on consecutive evenings at Wanda in December. The first of which was nominated for Rescue of the month.

Date : 12/12/23
Time: approx 6:10pm – after lifeguards had finished for the day.
Location: north of Wanda (approx 250m) – just before track 6

Wanda Surf team had just completed training. Most of the competitors had adjourned to the clubhouse for showers. A small group of the male training group remained on the beach to complete their regular “World Champo” body surfing contest. After they completed that, they were chatting on the water’s edge. They heard screams for help coming from approx 80-100m north of where they were standing.

3 swimmers in distress were caught in a strong rip – 2 males and a female. English tourists in their mid-twenties. They were screaming for help with most concern around the female.

Noah Steiner, Ben Sutton, and Nich Middleton grabbed their boards, ran north and then paddled out. Each of the boys headed to a different patient in a co-ordinated response.

Noah and Nich rescued the 2 males. The female was in significant trouble – slipping under the water. Ben reached the female and held her above water before managing to get her on the board. The female patient was in respiratory distress and panicking. She let Ben know she was a severe asthmatic and couldn’t breathe. Noah Steiner, after returning his patient to shore, noticed the concerns for the female were serious and headed back out to assist. Ben brought the female patient into shore on his board.

Will Steiner, Dane Sutton, Jackson Middleton and Jack Fisher had paddled down in support but remained closer to shore to co-ordinate the rescue and provide post-rescue care. Nich sent Jackson to run to the clubhouse to get a Ventolin puffer and to alert those at the clubhouse to the incident unfolding.

The 3 patients were given first aid and monitored for a period. Most concern surrounded the female patient. The patients were offered advanced medical care (ambulance) on several occasions however they refused. Ben then talked to them about the symptoms of secondary drowning, to watch for any deterioration and to seek urgent medical care if they were unwell.

In summary, the boys were able to recognise the severity of the situation and used their years of training as competitors and lifesavers to perform a critical rescue. They ran to the rip, paddled out, and performed effective board rescues of each patient to get them back to shore safely. They were then able to provide post-incident care and further support and advice for an extended period. They had no external support – given there were no lifeguards on duty – no radios and used the only equipment at their disposal, being their racing mals.

They showed initiative and leadership, planned the rescue, executed the rescue and provided post-incident care. Paperwork was also completed. Their actions prevented what witnesses described as a likely fatal outcome.

Well done boys – Wanda is extremely proud of you! This rescue was nominated for December Rescue of the Month.

Amazingly, there was another rescue performed the very next evening (13/12 at about 5:30pm). A patient was getting carried out in a rip. The senior water training group was training at the same time. Wanda member, Morgan Lloyd, noticed the patient in distress as he was out paddling his board in training. He managed to identify the situation as being critical and left the training group to paddle across to the patient prior to members of the public and lifeguards being able to reach it.

Again, an example of presence of mind and being able to utilise all the years of training, knowledge and skills to avert another potentially serious situation. Well done to Morgan! Fantastic effort.

IRB LAUNCH 2023 – DONATED BY THE HOLT ESTATE 1861

On Sunday 19 November we were excited and proud to Launch Wanda’s new inflatable rescue boat (IRB) donated by The Holt Estate 1861 and named in honour of hard-working volunteers Brett “Tiny” Porteous and Mark “Lakey” Lake.

It was a memorable day watching our new IRB in action and welcoming our special guests, Mayor Carmello Pesce, The Hon. Mark Speakman, The Holt Estate 1861, Wanda Members, friends, family and supporters as we thanked and acknowledged Brett and Mark for their remarkable commitment to Wanda and the community and for the tremendous support we have received over the last 2 decades by The Holt Estate 1861.

BRETT PORTEOUS gained his IRB credentials in 2012 and has been Wanda’s IRB Captain for the last 2 seasons; a role that comes along with an enormous amount of work outside of patrol hours to keep Wanda’s IRBs “Rescue Ready” and on the water. Brett is a fantastic contributor, completing patrols, being a stalwart of the Nipper IRB section for the better part of a decade, manning the IRB every Sunday over summer at Nippers. Brett has been in the IRB for countless carnivals; for both setup and water safety, sometimes starting before the sun comes up, and often leaving at the end of the day in the dark.

MARK LAKE has been a constant and reliable presence in the IRB section of the last 6 years since gaining his IRB credentials in 2018. He is the first to volunteer to help set up carnivals, fulfill carnival IRB shifts, complete IRB maintenance and work through the annual gear inspection. He has also been a regular IRB Crew member during his tenure in the Nipper IRB section, and often substitutes for IRB drivers and crew on Patrols at Wanda.

Both Brett and Mark have been instrumental in supporting our community, giving back and inspiring the next generation at Wanda.

Wanda SLSC Tradies One Club Surf Carnival

In testing surf conditions, over 1,200 competitors hit the beach on Saturday for the annual Wanda SLSC Tradies One Club Surf Carnival.

Now in its eighth year, leading athletes, masters, and nippers came from across greater NSW, with visiting competitors also from Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, and Western Australia.

The Carnival also hosted the 5,000 Summer of Surf event for 2023/2024 and a special Ocean M event for the open ironman/woman competitors, the carnival provided an important hit out for elite athletes in the lead up to the Nutrigrain Trials in coming weeks.

Fiona Sutton, Wanda SLSC President said that “the Tradies One Club surf carnival is now arguably one of the largest traditional surf club carnivals across NSW, and has firmly established itself as a leading event on the Surf Life Saving NSW calendar.”

The big surf conditions saw the relocation of the younger competitors to Cronulla Beach, while the older athletes tested themselves in the waves at Wanda.

Mrs. Sutton was delighted with the day and said, “our big local carnival bought together surf lifesaving members of all ages across all disciplines of surf sports to demonstrate their skill, fitness and bravery.”

The first event of the day was the Open 2km beach run. Wanda showed their domination in the event with Kyle Mason taking open division line hours in the early morning cool conditions. The 2km ski paddles, now a traditional event to commence the carnival’s water programme were won by Wanda’s Britney Pierce and Manly’s Kendrick Louis. Newport SLSC showed their strength in the open women’s arena with Piper Harrison taking out the Open Ironwoman race and Sarah Locke displaying strong surf skills to win the Open Surf Race event. Eliza Johnson, from Swansea Belmont, navigated the difficult surf breaks to win the Open Ski race. Georgia Singleton, from Manly, took out the Open Board race title for the second year in a row.

In the men’s open water events, it was the Nutrigrain athletes who flourished in the conditions. Newport’s Conner Maggs displayed the form that gained him 8 Australian titles earlier this year to win the Open Swim and Board events. Manly’s Kendrick Louis won the Open Ski and Queensland’s Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park fan favourite Ben Carberry took line honours in the Ironman. Wanda stars, Nich Middleton and Noah Steiner, lead comfortably for the first two legs of the Ironman, before being swamped by the eventual winners catching waves from behind.

Proud host club Wanda used their home beach advantage to claim first place in the Open Mixed 6-person Taplin event.

In beach events, it was Mollymook’s Australian Representative, Sam Zustovich, who edged out his teammate, Jack Bridges, to win the Brooks Marc Leabeater Memorial Trophy for the Open Men’s Sprint, the trophy presented by Marc’s parents, Larry and Tania. Poppy Doran, from Swansea Belmont, won the Open Women’s Sprint, with Payton Williams, from Mollymook placing second. Mollymook continued their dominance in the beach events, with Sam and Payton also taking out the Open Beach Flags events.

The feature events of the U14 age category were the U14 Ironman and Ironwoman sponsored by Voodoo Dri/Real Play which were won by Henry Whitehead of Manly and Lisa Derz of Newport.

At Cronulla Beach, around 600 U8-U13 aged nippers and inclusive competitors took part in their relocated water and beach events. Competition was fierce amongst the Bate Bay clubs, but also from North Bondi, Maroubra, North Curl Curl and further afield from Cooks Hill, Redhead, Gerringong, and Warilla Barrack Point.

Mrs. Sutton expressed her pride and thanks to all involved explaining that “Carnivals of this magnitude and complexity cannot happen without lots of support. Particular thanks are directed to Sutherland Shire Council and their Lifeguard team for all their support and assistance, as well as Cronulla SLSC for their significant assistance with the relocation of the younger age groups to their beach. Wanda also acknowledges the generous ongoing support from our key sponsor, Tradies, and the contribution of the hundreds of volunteers who made the day possible”.

In true ‘One Club’ spirit, we now look ahead to the Tradies Wanda Boat Carnival next weekend for more spectacular racing to conclude the new 2-part format, introduced for the first time this season”.

The pointscore finished with Wanda SLSC in first place on 661 points, followed by South Maroubra on 386 points and Cronulla third on 297. Elouera finished fourth and North Cronulla equal fifth with Newport. The scores include the surf boat carnival and inclusive events.
