WANDA 3rd AT SURF LIFE SAVING STATE AGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Wanda Nippers finished 3rd overall at the 2021 NSW Surf Life Saving State Age Championships, held at Swansea Belmont SLSC 25-28 February 2021.

The team took home 31 medals, including 11 newly crowned state champions. North Curl Curl SLSC and Cooks Hill took out 1st and 2nd place respectively on the pointscore, with Coogee (4th) and Swansea Belmont (5th) rounding out the top five clubs.

Thousands of nippers, aged u9-u14, competed at the event across all surf lifesaving disciplines including water, beach and R&R.

“It was an excellent Championships for Wanda and we’re very proud of all our nippers,” said Fiona Sutton, Chairperson, Wanda Nippers.

“Our third place was an improvement on 5th last year and a real testament to our competitors and volunteers who have worked really hard this season.

“Given the Covid situation, it was really very impressive SLSNSW was able to run the event. We’re grateful our nippers got the opportunity to get out there and give it a go against the best of the best from around NSW.

“There were many highlights across the four days for Wanda and it’s always hard to single out a few great performances.

“Keira Vincent winning the state title in both flags and beach sprint showed what a true champion of the beach she is. It’s a feat she has achieved on several occasions and quite remarkable.

“Our little pocket rocket Zara Zammit-Mayer took out Gold in the u11 swim and backed it up with Silver in the u11 ironwoman, another great achievement for a young competitor.

“It was again fantastic to have our Wanda competitors in the Inclusive events, with Cooper and Felix winning Gold medals. The inclusive events are inspiring to watch and a great addition to the State program.

“Overall, Wanda was really strong in the u9-u11 water age groups and had a great haul on the beach overall, so we really look forward to further success in coming years.

“A huge thanks to all our coaches, volunteers, water safety, IRB, officials and families for making our 2021 State Championship such a success,” said Mrs Sutton.
