Season 2020 is well and truly underway, from which we introduce a new partnership between Surf Life Saving NSW and the NSW Department of Primary Industries which will see a UAV Service for both Water Safety around the Patrolled area and Marine Life observations for the safety of the general public. We are extremely excited about this collaboration and the capabilities that it adds to our service.

As you may have already seen or heard, Drones are becoming an important aspect of our operations in Surf Life Saving. More specifically, Wanda SLSC recently entered into a partnership with SLSNSW (funded by the NSW Department of Primary Industries) which will see two drones at Wanda Beach moving forward. The details of this program are such that there will be a paid UAV Operator flying a drone during school holiday periods, and scope for Volunteer qualified UAV operators (Wanda members) to fly drone(s) whilst on Patrol for Wanda SLSC.

We are pleased to advise that Harry Stivactas is Wanda SLSC’s UAV Coordinator and can answer most questions. There is scope for us to increase the number of UAV trained members to fly in a volunteer capacity on Patrol moving into the future. At this point, we are taking expressions of interest for future UAV operators, which should be forwarded to clubhouse@wandaslsc.com.au, or online here. Please note, the minimum age for operating a drone in Sydney Branch is 18.

We are extremely excited about this new capability and believe it should increase our capacity in maintaining our goal/record of zero lives lost between the red and yellow flags when Patrolling.
