2ND ANNUAL WANDA SLSC TRADIES
“ONE CLUB” CARNIVAL

The second annual Tradies “One Club” Surf Carnival was conducted in ideal conditions at Wanda Beach on Sunday, 21 January 2018.

Wanda delivered an innovative event with selected events involving competitors from U9 to O40 competing simultaneously over five water arenas and one beach area. There were some featured sponsored events with cash and prizes together with other participant and random draw prizes. The upbeat event presentation included stalls, BBQ, music, selected commentary and sponsor and supporter promotion.

There were 23 clubs in attendance from as far afield as Caves Beach Newcastle and the Wollongong clubs on the South Coast with over 800 competitors participating. It was estimated that with Officials, Mums, Dads and spectators there we over 3000 people on the beach for the Carnival.

The highlights of the Carnival included:

  • The Tradies 2km Ocean to Beach Paddle in Ski Race with over 40 competitors commencing the carnival. Ben Walker of North Bondi was first across the finish line with Carla Papic of Cronulla winning the women’s division.
  • Caves Beach won the Open March Past.
  • The Tradies Open Male Taplin Relay won by Elouera from Wanda.
     
  • The Brooks Marc Leabeater Cup Open Mens Beach Sprint won by Michael Kember of Coogee.
  • The Fitness First Open Female Beach Sprint won by Sophie McGovern of Coogee.
  • The Tradies Open Male 2km Beach Run won by Wanda's Lachlan Crawford.
  • The Tradies Southside Open Female 2km Beach Run won by Clovelly’s Bernadette Chisholm.
  • The Tradies Open Ironman won by Mitchell Allum of Wanda with cousin Hayden Allum in second.
  • The Tradies Open Ironwoman won by Wanda’s Britney Pierce from sister Elyssa.

Wanda convincingly won the Tradies Trophy for the overall club point score with 934 points from Coogee on 488 points and Cronulla on 385 points. North Cronulla finished 5th and Elouera 7th.

The major Carnival sponsor was The Tradies with significant event support from Brooks, Fitness First, Channel 9, Engine, Ohana Ocean Athletes, Hooded, Purnell Motors, The Music Bus, Cronulla Surfing Academy and The Sharkies. The Carnival atmosphere was further enhanced by the presence of nine product stalls, BBQs, Snow Cones and a Coffee Van.

Mark Sargeant, President of the Club believes that the success of the day was due to the efforts of the whole club, the participants and the support of sponsors and supporters. Mark gave particular thanks and acknowledgment to the work of the Organising Committee, the Club’s Board, The Nippers, Workforce, Ladies Committee, Office, Officials, Water Safety, Patrol, First Aid, the Branch Office, the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader, and the IRBs led by Peter Burst. In addition, the Club also received outstanding support and cooperation from the Sutherland Shire Council and its lifeguards led by Manager Brett Richardson.
