Wanda club renown for competition in all events in surf lifesaving.
This year has seen the surgence of board paddlers. The U15 board relay team place 2nd, the U19 board relay 1st and the Open board relay team places 3rd. The open board relay had two U19’s in Hayden Allum and Michael Fox (whom also won the 2km beach run) Michael was against training partner Nathan Smith on the last leg, around the final buoy of the board relay Michael said "just like training” Nathan soon cleared out and Cronulla won the board relay, Michael paddled Wanda into 3rd spot.
The R&R teams again did their part to help Wanda in the point score with wins in the U19, Open 5 Man R&R , 6 Man R&R. Kurt Melville claimed his 3rd gold medal of the titles taking out the converted open belt title from more fancied competitors Chris Allum and Matt Freeman.
The newest event to the state titles is the 2km beach sprint, Wanda cleaned up 3 gold medals with Mel Campbell winning the Open women’s, Michael Fox won the U19 (2Gold) and newcomer Bree Jones won the U15 womens easily. Bree will not be competing in the 2km at the Australian as she has been selected in the NSW team for Triathlons.
The boat section had a awesome first day of competition with all crews except for the A crew making it through to the final day. The U19 lead the way for the boat section making the final 8 which was an awesome effort in the first year as rowers. The other crews missed out on finals. The womens boat rolled on the testing Sunday waves.
The lifesaving section had only a small contingent this year with Chris Pryke placing 3rd in the U17 Champion Lifesaver and Ryan Shelley made the final of the Open Men’s. Karin Jones and Marion Hopcroft also competed in the first aid.
The beachies, for every awesome effort we seem to have an equal ammount of misfortune. Marc “twinkle toes” Leabeatter on the sand just keeps suprising everyone. He won the Open and U19 Sprint and had 2 more gold in the Open and U19 relays if it wasn’t for a dropped batten and a disqualification. My only words to the section is “YOUR DUE”.
The Wanda Swimmers also had a great weekend with medals in the Open womens teams. Thanks must go out to the Ladies Committee for keeping the officials hydrated and fed. Trevor Elliott and his workforces tireless effort has also not gone unnoticed.
A;lso a special mention to Wanda's Taplin relay who came 5th and Joel Bowleski - his first State medal in 18 years of Lifesaving competition
The State titles over the last two years has not only been great spectator event but has strengthened Wanda SLSC. Good luck to those making the trip to Perth. Especially the beachies
